Hey if you are part of a band or a solo artist who has a marketing budget and some time to do some job interviews then hiring a music promotions company may be the right move for you.  Afterall, a music promotions company will help get you some fans and more success without spending all your time trying to distribute your music on the internet or trying to run down some record company.

I heard once that there are several musicians out there that are spending multiple hours a day trying to promote their music.  This is just a tragic thing.  Let’s face it, for most musicians your talent is in your music not in marketing your music.  It would be very unlikely that the majority of musicians are actually equally as interested in marketing.

If you are spending more than 20% of your time set aside for music just trying to sell your music then you probably should rethink your promotion strategy.  The problem is most people don’t have the budget to pay some music promotions company to do digital music distribution.  On top of that who even knows which one of these companies will actually get you success and not just take your money?

The better strategy for most people is to market their own music.  There are several benefits:

1.  You don’t need a marketing budget there are ways to do this for free.

2.  If you become successful at this you don’t have to share the reward with someone else.

3.  You don’t have to worry about being scammed out of your money.

4.  You have full control over everything if you decide to change directions you can do that.

So what could be wrong with this strategy?

Well nothing, except it can literally take all your time and stop you from creating new music.  Let’s say it is successful, you build a bunch of fans.  People love your music.  What’s the issue?  Nothing, except you have no more music because you spent all your time doing marketing instead of making music.

Now, the alternative to this is to hire a music promotions company.  They are going to take money from you and go out and promote you.  Now, that can be beneficial, yes but it is going to cost you.

  • These people will help you by scoring you bigger gigs and getting you publicity.   The problem is the amount of money you spend will only be justified if you are good, and the people who hire are good.
  • So what does a good music promotions company do for you?
  • They will take your music and get it on the plate of radio stations both at the local and national level.  You can imagine the exposure this will get you.
  • These same companies will also get you placed in online places.  Music places like Myspace.  Ezines that will talk about you.  A lot of promotions that exist online.
  • These same companies can also get your music talked about on thousands of blogs.  They have the contacts they need to get your music looked at.
  • They will get you placed in directories, good directories, these are places that tons of people go back to over and over to find new and good music.
  • You can get your music sent out through podcasts that a tone of people listen to.  Land instantly on iPods.  This is digital music distribution at its finest!
  • Quite possibly even Indie record deals.  Yes they are small, but this gets your foot in the door to a big deal.

Independent music distribution is one of the hardest things you can try to do.   That being said it has gotten a lot easier with recent technology than it used to be.  Can you imagine back in the 1980s for instance before there was Youtube, Myspace, Twitter, Facebook and all the other’s how hard it was to do independent music distribution?  Let’s face the facts, back in the day if you made it big you were an extremely hard worker or a very smart marketer, or you were just insanely talented.  I think there is probably a good possibility that even the insanely talented would have gotten overlooked back in the day just because of the fact that they were unable to do any type of digital music distribution.  As a matter of fact they weren’t even able to do digital music .

Independent music distribution is just like music promotions company usage.  There are costs involved.  I mean as we all know there are costs involved to all of this.  Everyone who is successful has to make some sort of investment though.  That investment may only be time, but usually it is more an investment of money.

Here are my tips for digital music distribution:

1.  Spend quality time recording a 3 to 5 track CD.  Go get quality recording, spend time in a good studio and pay someone who knows what they are doing to master your tracks.

2.  Once you get the recording done you need to have 1,000 copies made.  Usually in this quantity you get a discount done on the production.

3.  The real purpose of these CDs are to sell at your live shows.  Remember this is how independent music distribution was done back in the day!

4.  If you don’t have a website for your band, get on it.  You can build one yourself or pay someone to do it.  There are good people willing to do it on sites like Odesk or Getafreelancer and most of them will do a fantastic job for cheap!  Your band is a business, do not make your website look like your garage make it look professional.  Check sites of big artists, that is what you want your site to look like!

5.  Set up an account with Paypal and have your site sell your CDs and also have it sell digital copies of your singles.

6.  Promote your band and your website every chance you get.  Use the social networking sites mentioned above as well as forums (make sure you contribute not just SPAM).

7.  Start a BLOG as part of your website and promote your band there.

8.  Run contests, have giveaways for your fans.  Here is a great example.  Make a blog post, give away a free CD to the person who makes the best video promoting your blog and uploads it to YouTube, have them comment on your blog post with the Youtube Video.  Now your fans are promoting you, the more comments the more people will do it.  It’s a viral effect.  People on Youtube see the fan promoting you and visit your site.
